This application offers a comprehensive platform for exploring and understanding the Antonine Wall, a significant archaeological feature designated as part of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site. Constructed circa 142 AD, the turf-built defense extended across the central region of Scotland and remains a subject of historical interest. The app provides users with access to various sites, including forts, fortlets, a bathhouse, and remnants of ditches and banks, all situated within convenient reach of local towns and railway stations.

Upon downloading, users can engage with immersive 360° virtual reconstructions, interact with detailed 3D models of artifacts, and examine the landscape along the Wall—whether from a stationary viewpoint or remotely from their own devices. The app integrates features such as GPS navigation with alerts for nearby points of interest, augmented reality overlays showing sites within the landscape via camera view, and 2D image recognition for certain locations, enhancing the interpretive experience.

The application utilizes zoomable OpenStreetMap data for intuitive navigation. Both map layers and archaeological content are available offline, eliminating dependency on internet connectivity. Users can select Points of Interest on maps to access corresponding multimedia material—including videos, audio guides, textual explanations, and high-resolution images—alongside interactive 3D visualizations.

Currently, content is centered on the Roman fort at Bar Hill, with plans to expand coverage to additional sites along the Antonine Wall in subsequent updates. The project benefits from co-funding by the Creative Europe program and collaborative partnerships with organizations including Historic Environment Scotland, Landesstelle für nichtstaatliche Museen in Bavaria, CDDV—Centre for Digital Documentation and Visualisation—and edufilm und medien GmbH.

Funding and support have been provided by institutions such as Bayerische Sparkassenstiftung (the Bavarian Savings Bank Foundation), the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow—which contributed artefacts from their collections—and local authorities including West Dunbartonshire Council, Glasgow City Council, East Dunbartonshire Council, North Lanarkshire Council, and Falkirk Council.
